Measuring Guide

Measuring for Roller Blinds

You’ll need a steel measuring tape (more accurate than other types) and something to record your measurements such as pen and paper.

Note: ensure tape is straight and tight when you take your measurements – in millimetres (mm).

Don’t add any margins – we will do that – but record exact measurements.

Firstly you need to decide if you want your blinds inside-mounted (set inside your window frame) or outside-mounted (covering your window frame).

Inside-mounted roller blinds are usually front-rolled – which means that the fabric rolls off the front of the roller tube to avoid the obstruction of any knobs, handles, winders or the inner window frame. For a flush mount (normal for inside-mounted), your window needs to be set into the architrave by at least 60mm.

Now, measure your width and drop as per the diagram below.

Measure width at the top of the window. Measure drop on the left side of window.

Choose which side you want your controls – either left or right.

Outside-mounted roller blinds are usually back-rolled to ensure the fabric stays tight to the architrave – for maximum privacy and light control.

Now, measure your width and drop as per the diagram below.

Measure the width from the left edge of the left architrave to the right edge of the right architrave at the top of your window frame.

Measure the drop from the top of the top architrave to the bottom of the bottom architrave. This measurement may be increased if you want your blind to drop past the bottom of your window frame or to the floor.

Choose which side you want your controls – either left or right.

Now you’re ready to order, so go to the Sunscreen or Blockout Roller blinds page (according to the kind of blinds you want) and click on the blue “Order Blinds” button, then fill-in your figures on the ordering page that appears.

The same measurements above apply for multiple blinds, but they’ll be mounted side-by-side. If your window frame has three equal width panels, measure the overall width and just divide by three. Measure the drop as per the instruction above.

If your sliding door or window panels are not equal, measure each panel separately. The measurements added together should be the same as the overall width.

Measuring for Venetian Blinds

You’ll need a steel measuring tape (more accurate than other types) and a means of recording measurements such as pen and paper.

Note: Ensure tape is straight and tight (pushed up against jamb) and do not add any margins – we will do that – but record exact measurements.

Firstly you need to decide if you want your blinds inside-mounted (set into your window frame) or outside-mounted (covering your window frame)

Measure width

Go to window frame and measure width from jamb to jamb with tape straight and tight (pushed firmly against jamb).

Measure both at the top and bottom of the window, and record the smaller figure as we have to fit the blind inside the tightest part of the window.
Note anything that might obstruct the blinds such as window catches. The blinds cannot sit where they are but will need to sit in front of them.

Measure height

Measure the vertical drop from the top jamb down to the window sill at the left and right sides, and note down the smaller figure.

Measure width

Go to window and measure the width from left (outer) side of left architrave across to right (outer) side of right architrave – with tape straight and tight (pulled firmly).

Measure both at the top and bottom of the window, and record the larger figure as we have to cover the biggest part of the window.

Measure height

Measure height from top of upper architrave down to bottom of lower architrave – with tape straight and tight (pulled firmly).
Measure both at the left and right of the window, and record the larger figure as we have to cover the biggest part of the window.

Measure valance return depth

Measure the distance that you want your valance (fascia) to stand out from the architrave. This is the width of the valance return (sides of the valance). It should be around 65mm.
